OK, now THIS one definately looks like ice, so I’m bringing up the Containment thing again, only this has a slightly different hue to it than if you were to look up while playing on that level.
looks very cold their.. perhaps a *major* containment halo were the rings temperature was lowered dramatcially to kill the flood when the flood attacked/escaped.
Comment by Gangly Creature — May 3, 2008 @ 4:00 am
You know, maybe the Forerunners built some of these ‘icy rings'(if they even are ice) to purposely encase all of the control centers and laboratories with Flood samples. Kind of like a fail-safe in case the samples were released.
The icy motif looks conainment like and this could be the ring where the multiplayer map “Lockout” is located it looks like it would effectively contain the flood because the flood dont realy have any means of keeping warm they are basically a mass of flesh and they would freeze to death and the flood spores would have nowere to attach and grow into infectious forms and would also freeze.
I watched “I Am Legend” a while ago. The main character applies an antidote to an infected patient, who dies. He takes the antidote out, which brings said patient back to life.
At the end, he had laid some (correction, LOTS) of ice under the patient, significantly lowering their temparature. The antidote works splendidly.
Maybe this works?
Comparing the symbol shown with this ring with the one found in the beastiary that came with the Legendary edition of H3, the flood symbol is the same as the one for this ring… Coincidence?
After all, we never really saw (or at least I didn’t) any glaciers on either Instalation 04 or 05 while playing, perhaps these halo instalations can be matched to other maps.
Ex: Isolation could take place on the infected delta halo, The original Lockout could also have been on avalanche, that barren map on halo 2 with the cow skull could have been one of the “glassed?” instalations. All I know is I never saw some of these places in any campaign, so this is just and idea for where they might actually be located in the galaxy.
Installation 06 is obviously an artic environment with indications of some sort of ocean. As mentioned above it could quite be the primary source of Flood Containment and Research. I would like to bring up another interesting thing I have noticed is that fire seems to destroy the Floods body mass, could the cold possibly sterilize it or slow down the increase of mass?
Comment by 0000 - Unknown Seer — May 5, 2008 @ 4:00 pm
i say icy was meant to be, because if your smart you will remember that grunts like extreme cold, and have masks to give them their climate. there are thousands of species they could of used these rings to hold some of the life forms.
Could’ve been an extra measure made by the Mantle to preserve more lifeforms between the installations and the ark. Sounds good psychic00000. It’d explain the varying climates. But I think that the rings were designed to simulate varying Earth-like climates.
no, i don’t think it would be for other species, after all “we”, reclaimers, are the only heirs for the Forerunners and the reclaimers are the only ones that can activate the halo’s, so why build an environment suted for other species?
i say containment for sure. maybe there was a small outbrake here and the Forerunners made it like this, because they didn’t want to damage the halo but it did the job of containing the Flood.
That circle looks like a lake (maybe frozen) and I can see a triangular island in the middle (with what seems to be a snowcapped mountain). I wouldn’t be surprised if that were 06’s control room.
We saw snow and ice in Halo:CE, remember assault on the control room? Cortana mentioned that the weather was synthetic, in other words, the Forerunners controlled the climates of the Halos. I say this is more of a glass world, not glassed world though, but a shield one.
Ice. Lost of ice. No bones about it. There’s no cloud cover near the hole so this makes the assumption much easier. It’s most likely a frozen ocean. It’s way to large to be a lake given an installation’s size.
It could be possible that the rings mimmic the atmosphere of the planets they are next to, this would likely have happened when the rings were constructed. Thus meaning that the planets would change over thousands of years and the rings could stay the same. And don’t start about threshold, it could have been a forunner industry planet that once the flood took hold of the machines and factory spewed toxic gas of something along those lines.
The thing we nned to think about is, if that was the Arc control room, where are the pictures of the other planets that they created?
The frozen ocean/lake is a crater made by a asteroid. “ooooo but i see a iland in the middle” that is ware the ice was reformed once it hit. think of this, whine a drop ow water falls in to a full bathtub a hump appears for a split second in the center of the water crater it macs.
It looks like Saturn’s moon Europa to me, and many scientists believe that it’s frozen ocean could harbour life. It’s possible that the Forerunner built this ring to assertain if the flood could infect such forms of life (as moons similar to Europa are most likely common throughout the galaxy)
Comment by Truth and Reconcilliation — May 23, 2008 @ 5:53 pm
this one had almost neared completion of its boisphere when the flood attacked and they had to leave and left it in a limbo which made the climate unstable it peroidicaly changes in climate and dosent remain the same for long
Comment by coktail assasin — May 23, 2008 @ 6:54 pm
I may sound like a complete idiot when I ask this and there may be solid evidence to prove me as such, but who says all installations still contain the flood? For that matter who said ALL of them contained the flood at all? Yes 343GS said the installations were used to study the flood but could it be that only 2 or 3 Halos even harbored them to begin with… say from 03 to 05 as they were originally the ones most suitable for any life outside of the flood. And since the flood needed to eat these rings would be perfect to grow their food? This is merely speculation and any reply/argument will do.
if most of us are assuming that this halo ring is made of ice and\or watermass, then it is also very habtitable. this halo ring seems capable to sustain human life… (By using the process called Terraforming, a process taking 5 – 13 years. the atmosphere just seems is breathable).
Comment by survivaljuice — May 23, 2008 @ 10:56 pm
i dont think that it could be where contiament, sidewinder, lockout and avalanch are. on avalanche if you look up you see 04(II) on 05 you have the sacred icon and the quarintine zone, and on 04 you have an assult on the control room.
Just one observation; the flood is basically a macro-virus, this means that severe cold WILL NOT KILL IT, as viruses are protein-based DNA structures, but just like a real virus extreme cold will slow down it’s hosts’ metabolism, thus making it harder for the virus to spread. My personal thought is that it’s just a sheet of ice, and that there a huge ocean underneath it with all the important forerunner structures. but perhaps the flood is not a virus, but just a prion, still the same biological principles apply. just a thought
That hole about halfway up bothers me. It’s a perfect circle in the clouds, has a bright dot in the center, the edges of the “circle” are pretty much just an edge, not part of anything else, and it’s next to some sort of icy landmass, with the central “glowing dot” just a ways off the coast.
If all that white is cloud cover then, the portal to the Ark on Earth comes to my mind.
When the portal was activated, it created a hole in the clouds where the portal was going to be formed. Here, there is a circular break in the clouds over a lake with an island.
An idea to throw out is, what if there is a device similar to the portal in Africa on this Halo and it was left on for some reason?
Otherwise, it just looks like a giant, round, frozen, ocean to me. Icy.
I think that is curiously that the symbol of this installation appear in the bestiarium, but it isnt the symbol of flood, it is the symbol of six, interesting.
and yes, it is icy.
Maybe they were cultivating different types of life forms that needed various kinds of specialized environments to survive, in the hopes that they could produce a cure from something in these creatures’ DNA? Much like our own scientists searching for cancer cures in exotic flora and fauna from all over the world, but on a galactic scale. And the isolation of the Halos makes them perfect testing grounds for any potential cure – let out a bunch of Flood, spray them with genetically engineered bacteria X, see what happens.
What can I say? I think is obvious that this ring has its surface covered entirely of ice, with some water running below, and as almost everybody said, a dark spot that looks like a lake. I find Spartan-039 opinion about the Grunts really logical, but then, the atmosphere must be methane-based, and probably difficult for the Master Chief or any human to actually take control of this ring, maybe using oxygen tanks and thermal suits to go down to the surface.
Just theorizing here, but since there was quite a bit of climate variation on Installation 04, do you think that the rings may be programmed to alternate different climates to test the effects on the flood and/or different flora and fauna? Like, maybe Installation 04 or the Ark acts as the climate origin and every other ring would alter its climate based on a certain section of ’04 or the Ark
Example: Installation 01 would mimic desert area the Ark’s Cartographer was located in. Or, Installation 06 would mimic the Control Room on ’04, or the Citidael on the Ark.
