Gameplay Tips

Our saved film for Sierra 117 clocks in at 31:15 minutes long, so it’s not a hard watch at all if you’re having trouble making it through the level. I’ll explain a few core strategies and then briefly outline the film.

The Brutes are obviously the biggest challenge on this level, since they can be difficult to take down if you don’t approach them with the right strategy. You’ll find that in the video I tend to go for the plasma stick more often than anything else; this is not the easiest way to take them down – but it is a lot more fun than firing a plasma pistol burst at them and then BR’ing or Carbining them. But if you’re having trouble, that should be the way that you tackle each of them. Once you get that down (and there’s not much to get down about it), they’re no trouble at all.

Jackals have a small opening on the side of their shields that, if you shoot enough, will cause them to spin slightly, giving you the angle for a headshot. You need to be sure to hit them with all of your first shots, otherwise you’ll end up with them giving you angle while you’re busy reloading. As far as the Carbine/Beam Rifle Jackals, the best thing to do is memorize their locations and concentrate on them as soon as you enter an area.

Grunts can be easily headshotted or even taken out by the rapid firing of a plasma pistol if your ammo is low for your BR or Carbine.

The three most important things to remember are:

  • As often as possible, use long range weapons. Grunts and Jackals are easy kills since they rarely take cover, and attempting to attack them short range is, on Legendary, usually a death sentence delivered in the form of multiple Plasma Pistols.
  • You are not playing against actual people. While Halo 3’s A.I. is very good, enemies still move quite predictably, and they rarely sneak up on you without giving themselves away first.
  • Stay as close to cover as often as possible, and if your shields get too low, fall back. Again, you’re not playing against actual people that will always chase after you to get in that final killing shot. Enemies sometimes do this, but you can almost always hear them coming, which gives you the chance to escape to a new defensive position. Practicing self-control with this tip will lead to far less deaths, guaranteed. The good thing about Halo 2 and Halo 3 is that after just a few seconds behind cover, you’re back at 100% health. When in doubt, fall back; if you’re finding that levels are taking a long time to complete, this is the first thing you should work on.

First Strike

  • Don’t fire your weapon until your enemies see you.  Hide under the log and wait until the last possible moment to crawl under and start assassinating the Grunts.  If you time it right, you can get all of them before they see you.
  • The Brute Captain usually leaps down to attack you.  Grab one of the dead Grunts’ plasma pistols and use a burst to take down the Captain’s shields; follow it up with a headshot from your pistol.  Alternatively, stick him with a plasma if the Grunts dropped any.
  • Hide for a bit and let your marines do some damage.  In combinination with the Arbiter, they will usually fare pretty well.  Plus, if you stick your head out, the Phantom will blast you.
  • Keep at a distance for the next fights (the two dropped-off parties).  Use any dropped Brute Shots and keep recollecting spare plasma grenades.
  • Don’t be afraid to take it slow, since, at this point, you’re without a BR or Carbine.
  • Even Grunts can be deadly; don’t rush ahead when you’ve killed the last Captain.

Sleepers

  • Wait for the first Grunt to lie down and then assassinate him.
  • There may be a way to keep from being detected; experiment, if you don’t like my strategy.
  • On the right, at the end of the tunnel, you’ll find two Carbines.  Scan the trees for the Jackals and take them out first.  Then, take out as many Grunts as you can so you can move to the left.
  • Watch the shielded Jackals as you move ahead, here.  And be on the lookout for spare Carbine ammo.
  • Use the PP/C to take out the Brute.

Interrogation

  •  PP/C the Brute before he kills Malcom.  And watch out for the suicide Grunt.
  • As you pass over the land-bridge that the Brute was on, watch your left for a small party of Grunts that suddenly emerge.
  • You’ve got the higher ground at the last part here.  Headshot and grenade those fools.

Charlie Foxtrot

  • Use your remaining Carbine ammo to take out as many enemies as you can.  Then, pick up the BR on the ground.
  • By this time, your marines should have cleared most of the lower area.
  • Move down slowly and quickly take down the two Beam Rifle Jackals across the river.
  • Take out as many Grunts as you can before moving up on the left.
  • Use a frag to dispatch  the two shield Jackals on the left.
  • Round the corner slowly and take out the three Carbine Jackals one by one.
  • Headshot the Grunts and PP/C the Brutes.  Fall back and collect up grenades if needed.
  • Pick up the BR ammo before you take a left.
  • I recommend taking out the Jackal first; he’s on a ledge behind the group of guys in front of you.
  • PP/C the Brute or just throw a plasma or two to take out the small party at the bottom of the incline.
  • Move slowly and take out the Jackals as soon as you see them.  There are seven in this first area.  Grab one of their snipers if you want to.  And stock up on Carbine ammo.
  • Be very careful as you round the bend; high above you is a Beam Rifle Jackal.
  • Three more Carbine Jackals after him.

You Want Breakfast?

  • More Jackals.  One at top of the ridge you’re on, one on the left, and four along the back wall (one is on a cliff behind the Pelican).
  • Take out as many Grunts as you can before you drop down.  If you can snipe the Captain, that would make this part easier.
  • Otherwise, take out the guys directly below you and then drop down.
  • Do your best to pick off as many enemies as possible before moving out into the open.
  • As soon as you move into the boulder area, look up to your left – a Jackal that was hidden by tree trunk has a shot on you now.
  • As you turn to the right, watch out for another Jackal on the back wall.
  • Don’t forget that the Needler can be a powerful mid-to-short-range weapon if your enemy is staying stationary.
  • Hit the Pelican on the left for enough BR ammo to make the fight to the dam easy.  Be sure to grab the sniper.

Quid Pro Quo

  • Use your BR to take out the closer enemies first (Jackals and Grunts, since the Grunts can get close enough to PP you.  Watch out for Brute shots here.  Fall back when your shields get low.
  • Then, use your sniper to take out the two Jackals behind the Chieftain.
  • User your remaining sniper shots to take out as many Brutes as you can.  If you can kill the Chieftain quickly enough as he runs directly across the top of the dam, he’ll drop his invincibility.
  • Be sure to take out as many enemies below you as possible before you drop down.  It’s hard to find cover if there are too many Grunts still alive.
  • If you’ve been sniping at the Chieftain, then chances are that he’s after you, at this point.  I find the easiest way to take him out is by standing on top of the blasted-out building and BR’ing and throwing grenades at him.  He rarely leaps at you; usually he’ll just run around until you kill him.
  • Don’t forget to pick up his Hammer, if you want it.
  • If you move along the top of the dam, watch out for the two Jackals on the back left.
  • You can go underneath the top floor by dropping down on the right inside the first building.
  • Take out the remaining enemies from far away with grenades and a Carbine/Brute Shot, or sneak up on them from below and pick them off one by one with the Hammer.
  • When you clear them out, use the Hammer to take out the remaining Brute Captain.
  • Watch out for a few remaining Jackals (one or two) as you round the corner to head down to Johnson.

Extraction

  • Stay out of sight of the Phantoms, here; they’ll tear you apart if they can get a sight on you.
  • You should have plenty of grenades and enough long-range ammo to take out the small party that the Phantom drops off.  Just be sure to stay behind cover until Hocus takes down the Phantoms.

  2. a good strategy is to use the asault rifle. You could combine a burst with a melee attack, or a melee attack with a burst against Brutes

  3. I know how to get a battle rifle at the beginning of the mission. Start by shooting off 4 clips of your assault rifle while slowly coming up the right-hand side(don’t go too far). Once you have done that, whip out your pistol and use your visor scope to snipe him. After you’ve shot him, run over to his body AS FAST AS YOU CAN and pick up his assault rifle ammunition. If done correctly, you will have stripped him of his weapon, where the game will respawn him with a battle rifle. Continue on the regular path as soon as music starts playing, stop and wait for Johnson. Follow him to the waterfall and stop when the soldier says, “Sergeant Major! Phantom inbound!” Headshot him with your pistol again, and pick up his battle rifle! And because you killed him at the waterfall, he will remain there, so you can continually return and kill him for more ammo as needed!

  4. At Charlie Foxtrot, you can jump down into the river and walk on the riverbed around the whole lower area. It helps from getting shot by Brutes from the higher area, but really, it’s not that useful, but it’s just really cool imo. Feels like you’re a Navy Seal. Space Navy Seal, that is.
